1.0       Introduction
1.1 Terms of Reference.
This report was requested by Wayne Holmes, Head of Department and Lecturer for Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Unitec Institute of Technology. It was written by Arooj Haider. The aim of this report is to describe and discuss about the role of the Engineer, reflection of the role of the Engineering profession in society. It was to be submitted by the 16th of January 2018 with analysis and references.

2.0       History of the profession and the development of Engineering disciplines.
Engineering is basically an application of many different fields such as Mathematics, Science and Finance in order to explore, create, develop and maintain different structures, tools, materials, operations and inventions. When people use Math, Science and Economics that really is very important to understand first, helps them to make things work, makes them to understand on how to quantify things for desired outcome, how to plan, plot and invest the source (money) by using principles of Finance and Economics. Engineering can also be said as something that one can come up with and which has beneficial factors for people who use it in day to day life in different ways. Which in a way has a proven goal to make our lives better and easy.
The history of the word engineering is actually a little bit more recent than the practice of engineering, it has been around for thousands of years ever since the first person who used something to improve life for himself or his family and friends around in a way by means of his skills and hard work which ultimately lead to the discovery of Manmade tools. It can be dated back to the ancient times when humankind created tools and devices to ease the issues in daily life for example wheel, pulley, knife, hammer, chisel etc. These simple tools were some were early successful example of inventions which is basically engineering. There have been different phases and periods in development of engineering which starts back right from the early time when humans were still living out wild in the forest. Our Journey starts with Imhotep, the world’s first know engineer who is famous for designing the first pyramid of Egypt called as the pyramid of Djoser. A massive structure for its time in the year 2650 BC which was 62 meters high. The construction of this pyramid marked the start of a new fundamental era in engineering. Looking back at the first rising of different disciplines in engineering is as much fascinating as the small inventions and discoveries which lead to it. The Hydraulic engineering can be traced back to its discovery in the period when Egyptians started building dams for irrigation purpose in the year 2850 BC, the mighty Romans had then built their famous aqueducts for a brief period from 312 BC-109AD out of which most are damaged or destroyed at present. The Greeks had built their own long tunnel which was used for water transportation around the year 550 BC, both these architectures show the roots of development in Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering and Architecture over a brief period dated ages ago in past from today. Another Greek known as Thales of Miletus discovered static electricity which was the first step to Electrical engineering back in 600 BC although the real experiments in this field would not get started for the next two thousand years. All these people and many other had combined their skills, vision, handwork and potential in planning, inventing, developing and building something great for the future generations and that embarked a journey in regards to start of engineering.  These creations and inventions were made more than 2000 years ago and has definitely contributed to the world we live in now. As of today we have over a many different disciplines with sub-branches in engineering and each of them were discovered ages ago by those first pioneer engineers. In the recent times close to 1800s period people were already far ahead from those old discoveries and much of the engineering of this time was related to military and war, this is when mechanical engineering started booming.

3.0         Structure and levels of the profession.
Engineering career follows different structures and levels which basically can be classified into bellow mentioned types

3.1 Engineer in Training: It is a designation for engineers who are yet to become professional engineers. These people are basically engineering interns and aren’t yet fully licensed to work by themselves. An engineer in training works under the guidance of a senior engineer or a supervisor allotted to him who closely follows the activities and tasks on completion by the trainee engineer and guides him onto the further process. As an Engineer in training one gets a good opportunity to learn, practice his technical skills and survive the engineering environment under supervised conditions. This provides a key factor in growth of an immature engineer onto becoming a professional licensed engineer.

3.2 Intermediate Engineers: This level of engineers lies between a trainee engineer and a professional licensed engineer. In this position one can be experienced as a trainee engineer working on a project but is not capable enough or have not work sufficient enough to claim a full professional engineering license or to perform an engineering work task by himself.  3.3 Engineers:This position is allotted to people once they have a fully professional engineering licence and or has had enough experience in engineering work projects under supervised condition and has had studied engineering and passed/matched the basic requirements or qualifications needed for this engineering profession. 3.4 Senior Engineers:A senior engineer is someone who can plan, act and manage a small team of engineers. This person needs to provide necessary supervision and guidance to the team under him for achieving the planned output task or process with appropriate work experience.
3.5 Specialist/Management Engineer:This position can be sub-categorised as either a Technical engineer (Specialist engineer) or a Management engineer. A Technical engineer is someone who engages in technical supervision of company’s project, working with the planning and technical team. One can be allotted this position only when he has a good work experience technically and has worked on projects with instruments and technicians practically during his profession. A Management engineer is someone who manages engineers from different disciplines such as Industrial, Civil, Electrical and Software under himself. This position needs one to have good amount of experience in at least two disciplines of engineering which he manages. The main responsibility for someone on this position is to manage the system in order to help promote workplace efficiency and effectiveness for example in production facilities and to improve the co-ordination between them.
3.6 Principle Engineers: This position is top level in engineering profession below the CEO and VP. The principle engineer is one who leads the planning and execution for the whole project. This position often leads the whole team of engineers from different disciplines technically and manages them throughout the project phase. This position needs one to handle all the deadlines, budgets, look after procurement and supply chain and also simultaneously lead the team of engineers working below.
