Forensic Psychology Involvement in Intimate
Partner Violence

            The term intimate partner violence
encompasses a whole range of abuse that includes psychological, emotional,
physical sexual and also stalking between the present partners or past
partners. Forensic science evidence postulates that intimate partner violence
results from many issues that may be mental and physical. It also leads from
the ongoing partners that are rife within the relationships. Previous evidence
suggests that those who are at a greater risk of victimization are mostly women
and children. Forensic psychology can play a very vital role in ensuring that
the victims get the justice they deserve while the perpetrators are brought to
book.  The role of forensic psychology
can be encompassed so that its advantages can be greatly taken into consideration
to solve cases of intimate partner violence.

            The boundary between intimate
partner violence and a weak relationship is very thin according to forensic
scientists. Therefore in the forensic field, it is important that there is a
great deal of assessment of the perpetrators of domestic violence. This is to
ensure that the re-assaulting process is not repeated since important
strategies are put in place to ensure the risk is reduced to a bare minimum.

Seewald and colleagues conducted research that was used to examine the accuracy
that two methods of assessment were used in identifying the high-risk
perpetrators to compare them with those from the psychology students by the
forensic experts. They chose a population of thirty individuals from whom they
found the results after careful examination. Effectively, they did a follow up
of over eight years. After the study, they found very interesting observations
from the population under study. One of the main results was that the raters
with minimum clinical training were unable to differentiate those spouses who
kept on assaulting their partners day after day (Seewald, 2017).

            Henrichs and colleagues conducted
research where they sought to find the nature and characteristics of the
intimate partner violence perpetrators in the setting of forensic psychiatric
outpatient. The study investigated the criminological, psychopathological and victim
logical nature of the perpetrators of this vice which has taken root in the
lives of most people. To find their nature and characteristics, they measured
the mental capabilities and disorders of the patients. The mental disorders
were measured through interviews and final consensus diagnosis. They found out
that intimate partner violence perpetrators were highly likely to have higher
rates of previous physical victimization and intermittent explosive disorder
than the non-intimate violent perpetrators. Therefore the history of the
victimization and intermittent explosive disorder were specific characteristics
that would guide the forensic experts in a forensic psychiatric outpatient
setting (Henrichs et al.,.).

            Domestic violence results from many
causes. These guides can greatly help the forensic experts to solve the most
common problems that many couples and people in relationships face especially.

Different theories have been postulated on the causes of the violent
relationships. One of the most common theories was conducted by Lenore Walker
who came up with a cycle of violence. He named the phrase the Battered Woman
Syndrome which was a three-stage cycle process. Additionally, doctors have
greatly helped in expanding the cycle by formulating a dynamic model that was
all inclusive in the abusive relationships. The first step that greatly affects
the outcome is the use of charm by the perpetrator to intergt=rate themselves
into the life of the woman. The second stage is where the perpetrator shows
control and intolerance. He transitions completely unawares. Additionally, the perpetrator goes into a state
where verbal insults and physical violence take precedence. However, they are
followed by acts of apology and contrition. The female get awed by the action
of their perpetrators where they internalize the blame for the behavior of
their partners. This builds up isolation and confusion. Constant and consistent
follow-up by the forensic experts can help to guide them in decision making.

Decisively, it would guide the psychological experts to come up with ways of
addressing the situation such that they achieve the set objectives (Moyer,
2013).   Alison conducted research where
they sought to find the role of forensic experts in ensuring they did found the
root of the problem in solving them. The study was done in South London and
extended over a period of six months. Mainly the study was to investigate the
nature. By nature, they meant to significantly track the nature of the lives of
the individuals who were mainly affected by the battery and prolonged violence
that continued to hurt and stigmatize them. In addition to that, they wanted to
examine whether the victims had previously reported the incidences to forensic
physicians for help. In case the practitioners were contacted, they sought to
find whether it was really of help to the individuals. Communication played a
very instrumental role in the research since it greatly influenced the outcome
of the study that was twofold. On one side, the victims sought help while on
the other hand, the forensic physicians had a role to play in ensuring that the
perpetrators were brought to book. They concluded by noting that there is a
very definite role that the forensic physician had to play in the process of
documenting the injuries in the victims and the assailants. This is despite
them being minor (Alison, 2013).

Critical
and Reflective Analysis

The experts in the forensic field
and especially those who deal with domestic violence have a very big role to
play in ensuring that they make a reliable and valid assessment of the domestic
perpetrators who pose a big risk of repeating the mistake. Repeating the
mistake of re-assaulting, the intimate partner would solely rest on the
shoulders of the forensic experts. An assessment should be carried out to
ensure they are brought to book. This is because that one of the persons in the
relationship ends up getting hurt by the reckless behaviors of their partners.

As a citizen, they have their rights enshrined for in the constitution. This is
because the repercussions of the actions are not selective and can affect
either of them irrespective of the direction of the battery. In fear of being
hurt or killed they may end up hurting the other person dangerously (Storey and
Hart, 2014).

The training that the experts in the
forensic field undergo is enough for them to perform an evaluation of the state
of the mental capability of the perpetrator while keeping cognizance of the
fact that the victims are still at risk of being nattered. Intimate partners
are crucial beings who require specialized treatment and evaluation when it
comes to handling them. There are many types of intimate partner violence. They
come in all forms. However, all the forms involve control and manipulation of
the partner.  The main aim is to come
with a relationship that asymmetric on both angles. The forensic psychologists
should develop an approach that is all-encompassing without really focusing on
one side while avoiding the other significantly. The victim plays a big role in
ensuring that the perpetrator repeats the vice. They should, therefore, focus
on it while keeping an open mind on the issues.             Additionally, the mental problems may be the key reasons
for the propagation of the process. The risk of re-victimization is high when
the partner is highly insecure and is stressed out since their ability to make
important and informed decisions reduces greatly with time. It is unavoidable
given the weight of the matter in addition to the fact that the partnership is
bound together by cords that are unseen (Capaldi et al.,. 2012).

It is important that the matters are
premised on the fact that the partner is being abused regardless of other
factors as would otherwise be stated.
The legal system itself should be highly accommodative in that it keeps
all the factors at hand while solving the problems that are rife in the
relationships. Regarding the amount of mental violence, it is up to the courts
to decide and come with an amicable solution to the problem. In conclusion, as
long as the abuse causes pain on the other individual, it is up to the forensic
experts to prove the matter and develop a lifeline on the processes
respectively.
